Toelichting

Zoals in Opwaarts 2 (201X).

Zoals in ‘Schijnsel’ (2015).

Clarification

The theme of Wilma Terlouw - van den Top's (1965) oeuvre is the reflections of water and its  layers. The water surface reflects the reality above the water and reproduces it in a deformed and vague image. Often all you see is either the reflection while the original remains hidden, or something of the bottom becoming visible through the ripples of the water. Colours and atmospheres change with the reflections of the water.

The vagueness of spreading forms is exactly what the artist is looking for. Not because of the obscurity, but because of the possibilities in them opening up in front of your very eyes. It requires of you to have a good  look.  In the hazy, lively form of the water, a different kind of reality seems to appear. The water functions as a filter between what is and what is coming. Like in 'Opwaarts 2' (2010). The water is in motion and at the top something is being mirrored without you being able to detect what it is. What you see is a secret, painted at the moment when it may just be about to become clear.

Some water landscapes appear so strongly zoomed in, that they have a tendency towards the abstract. The water in 'Intelligent Design 2' (2011) is only just recognizable as water, it could also have been a sand drift. There it’s purely about colour and form. That could have the same effect as the vagueness: what comes into being is a kind of intangible  recognizability. The tinge of figuration gives you something to hold on to, the rest is open. At the same time one can recognize a basic pattern of nature, a style characteristic of creation.

The dynamics of the oeuvre is in the broad variation from dark and threatening to very light and sparkling, often within one canvas. Light and dark are in a play of powers, just like the horizontal and vertical lines. There is movement within. Unconsciously the attention of the looker-on is being drawn to the top of the picture, but the way the play of lines is organized it’s impossible to stay there. The horizontal is also asking for your attention, after which you automatically find yourself at the top. Like in ‘Schijnsel’ (2015). The light comes from above, the water is being pulled towards it.  Everything is being drawn together towards top left. That arouses questions about the origin of that movement. Is it the wind blowing over the water, did something float past, did the movement maybe come from underneath the surface of the water, is it only the working of the light? There is no way to find out,  all you can do is experience the dynamics.

A more radical work is 'Openin'g (2016) The water is darker than ever, the heavy grey horizon is unclear and darkened, but nevertheless here and there it is possible to see through. At the same time a clear bundle of light dominates the whole image. The light shines all the way down and the reflection spreads over the surface of the water. The lines are hard and so are the contrasts. There’s a breakthrough in the massive body of water through transparent light, hazily applied.

The artist prefers to work quickly and apply the paint lightly. One layer goes on top of the other until it becomes transparent and brings about depth and distance. And motion. Sources of inspiration are Bill Viola’s videos, the contrasts in the work of Gerhard Richter, the transparency by Marlene Dumas, the light test of Robert Zandvliet.

In this way through her expressive work, Wilma Terlouw researches the sensory perceptions and the invisible in their mutual relation. By looking closely, you see more and more of both. That is her starting point. It’s a play of presence and absence. Every work of her art is an attempt to bring as it were an intangible, hopeful future closer. By sensing, perceiving and giving form she gets somehow a grip on a tiny piece of reality, a reality that for us humans meanwhile is only partly visible. That’s for instance the theme of 'Schittering' (2013): water in evening time, or maybe still in the morning, grass, vague tree trunks, doubled in the light of the smooth water, here and there sparks of movement bringing light.
